Marsden Brings Common Sense to Juvenile DUI Laws

Burke, VA – Senator Dave Marsden introduced and had passed a bill to discourage underage drinking and driving, addressing a discrepancy in Virginia code many legislators had tried and failed to fix.

This law will make the penalty for having any alcohol in your system if you are under 21years old while operating a motor vehicle equal to possession of alcohol which is a Class I Misdemeanor. Previously it was a Class II Misdemeanor, which meant there was a lesser penalty for drinking and driving than there was for possession of alcohol under the age of 21. This will be signed into law today, June 30, 2011, by Governor McDonnell at a ceremony on Church Hill in Richmond.

Senator Dave Marsden Files for Re-Election

BURKE, VA – Virginia State Senate districts have been drawn and released to the public. Though the process is not done it is a big step in solidifying the lines for the next ten years. Legislators will return to Richmond next week for a Special Session for re-districting. With little population deviation in the 37th District, changes were minimal. Burke, Centreville and West Springfield continue to be the population centers for the district which is solely contained in Fairfax County.

Isn't It Obvious?

Once again, we have balanced our budget in Virginia in the most difficult and challenging financial environment since the Great Depression of the 1930s. It was my goal for this session of the General Assembly that we accomplish three things: first, that we maintain the car tax relief we currently enjoy, second, that the Local Composite Index (LCI) for school funding that finally adjusted to Fairfax County’s favor not be frozen at last year’s level granting us an additional $60 million over the biennium, and thirdly, that cuts to K-12 funding be minimal as the quality of our schools are the most critical factor in maintaining our home values.

Going Into Overtime

We went into overtime, although only for one extra day. The budget conferees from the Houseof Delegates and the Senate could not agree on reconciling their differing budgets until Sunday at 2 a.m. Compromise prevailed and we are able to present a spending plan for the rest of this fiscal year ending June 30, 2011, and for next fiscal year ending on June 30, 2012. The budget was balanced as it always is. We should be leaving Richmond late on Sunday night, Feb. 27, after a final vote on the budget having previously debated and passed 887 bills out of 1,882 that were introduced.

Marsden makes his case for 37th District Senate seat

As a Fairfax County resident for 57 years, I have a deep understanding of our community and what makes it special.
